Virtual humans are on-screen characters that are often embedded in learning technologies to deliver educational content. Little research has investigated how virtual humans can be used to correct common misconceptions. In this study, we explored how different types of narrative structures, refutation text and expository text, influence perceptions of trust, credibility, and learning outcomes. In addition, we conducted exploratory analyses examining how different measures of trust and credibility are related to each other and how these measures may mediate learning outcomes. Results showed that the type of narrative used did not influence any measure. However, the trust and credibility measures, while related to one another, were measurably distinct. In addition, only perceptions of message trust were significantly related to learning. Perceptions of message trust did not mediate learning outcomes, but were significantly predictive of learning at nearly the same effect as prior knowledge.more » « less

Human needs and goals are integral to engineering, but human-centered engineering requires understanding principles and methods from the social sciences. Instruction is needed to introduce engineering students to these concepts. This study explored (a) students’ initial attitudes toward human systems engineering (HSE) and the bridging of psychology and engineering and (b) how attitudes shifted over one semester. Undergraduate students responded to a survey of their attitudes and conceptions at the beginning (n = 215) and end (n = 146) of a semester. Students reported high perceived value for human-centered engineering, and these attitudes remained stable or increased. Students gained in their perceived understanding of psychological concepts and user-centered design, their ability to define HSE, and ability to articulate the value of human-centered engineering. Introductory coursework in Human Systems Engineering may thus help to prepare engineering students to appreciate the psychological underpinnings of their work and engage in human-centered engineering.more » « less

The current study an empirical evaluation of the PERvasive Learning System (PERLS). PERLS is a mobile microlearning platform designed for learning anytime and anywhere, taking advantage of planned and unplanned time during a learner’s daily schedule to enhance and reinforce learning. Soldiers taking classes from the Sabalauski Air Assault School at Fort Campbell, KY were recruited. This evaluation compared the impact of PERLS on soldiers’ self-efficacy for their self-regulated learning ability. This evaluation found evidence of impact for the PERLS when implemented into classroom setting with soldiers that used PERLS indicating higher self-efficacy scores.more » « less
